Tartan Takes Top

Tartan checks are having a serious moment - seen on all the catwalks and most recently on super star Rihanna when she appeared on the X-Factor a couple of weeks ago. It is great to see this heritage print on the up and with so many colour variations it is a great way to add instant lift, colour and even humour to your outfit. For a vintage twist, think Queen of tartan Vivienne Westwood and try a tartan fitted jacket over a kooky prom dress or, if you can't do it on such a large scale go for a vintage 1960s tote to make a fabulous nod to this very British trend.

Amelia Lily Wears Dress From Rock My Vintage - Prom-tastic

We are literally in hyperventilating stages of happiness. On Sunday's show, Amelia Lily wore the gorgeous Lily prom dress that she asked to borrow from us. She loved it so much she wore it for the live results and was the first to get voted to stay in! Whilst this meant we saw less of the dress we are so happy she loves what we have to offer at Rock My Vintage. This TBA dress is just divine rocking both the fetish and prom trends that are storming this season. You can rock the EXACT same dress too.....

Heavy Metal Part 1

As a staunch believer in all things soft, seductive and generally vintage inspired, I have been a bit perplexed when it comes to adding anything that reminds me of nuts and bolts to my outfit. I am constantly reminded of my chainmail related disaster of 2000 and still shudder at the thought.

However, with the Autumn Winter metallic trend in full flow, I have forced myself to reconsider my aversion and to try and embrace the vibe. I have to admit, it has been tough but I am genuinely now a convert and found it relatively easy to combine this metal sheen with every day looks. Here is a two - part overview of how to work it without bordering on the Tin Man.

Day Time

Unless you work somewhere where you can wear gold leggings to work, this can be tricky but the safest way to bring shimmer into the office is through hair accessories. I am literally obsessed with this gold embellished hair band from New Look which goes with everything and provides an understated take on the trend.

Clearly jewellery is a no-brainer but think outside the box and add glitter or pearl sheen to make things more interesting. How about these glitter ivy earrings and bracelet from cult brand Tatty Devine to take on the wild nature trend too?!

Softly Softly

You may have noticed a slightly softer approach to tailoring and the lines of dresses on the catwalks this season. We adore this curvaceous loveliness not least because it hides a multitude of sins! The fashion pros, as always, have done it to the extreme including bubble like dresses with no structure looking almost like they have forgotten to complete the design or lamp shade style skirts that are high on impact! For those of us who have to walk to work or sit down on a bus, there is an easier way to work the look. Focus on bubble hem lines, origami inspired skirts or work it via a winter curved cape. Softly, Softly catchy fashion.

Hats Off To You

Cold ears are just about the worst things to endure in winter months and there is really no need with the collection of fabulous hats and warmers out there. As always, we are on the search for vintage inspired woolies and we reckon we have come up trumps this time. So, tip yours, tilt yours, hold it out for spare change or just keep your hat rack cosy - bring it on Jack Frost.

Fit Feet

Today is all about feet. We hate them but we love what keeps 'em pretty and at the moment we are all about the knee high boot. We have been excited about the knee high trend for ages now and waiting for colder days so we could rock the look. Don’t worry – gone are the days when knee highs were just about being sexy for boys – the boot is back but with style and class. We are particularly in love with the retro vibe that the catwalks have embraced – think wide tops and block heels rather than tight patent spikes. Our favourite right now is combining the colour block trend and wearing bolder boots with contrasting coloured coat or woollen dress. Perfect for keeping out winter blues! We wanted to share the love and get you thinking about how you can incorporate this look right through the season by showcasing some of the AW collections and the power of the knee high! Prepare to want…

Velvet Crush On You

Our current obsession is velvet… we love it and have taken to wearing it everywhere in some shape or form. Not only is it a great way to work your textures – team with anything from leather to lace – but it immediately adds a touch of the opulent to your look. Given that lady like styling is all the rage this is a super Brucey bonus! Here are a couple of bits we have added to the boutique to help you work this luxurious look.

Autumnal Colour Pop

It is a MASSIVE trend this season and how glad we are that colour popping madness has transcended the traditional summer months and is making the longer nights that bit brighter. We are all about big bold colour notes and mashing them all up in a firework of fabulousness. Fear not though, if you are not quite ready for a purple/yellow mash up just yet, you can opt for a bright blocks (think berry or mustard) or mix it up with a bold floral print to look just as wonderful. As always, we want a vintage twist to our trends and so have pulled out a couple of beauts from the boutique to get you going. Say boo to dark dismal days and hurrah to pep me up colour pops.

Looking Hot In The Bread Aisle

We have all heard those stories about meeting the partner of your dreams across a frozen chicken which can only mean one thing – you need to look good in the aisles! Now, popping out for a loaf and a pint of semi-skimmed can mean rocking a vintage look too. Gone are the days of getting out your crumpled plastic bag – make an effort girls! Introducing the ever so cute, environmentally friendly but seriously stylish eco-shopper! This re-usable shopping bag is made from washable organic cotton or canvas and boasts a great selection of wonderful vintage handbag printed to the front of the bag – Awesome. We have also found they also make the perfect gift for Mums and Aunties!

Take Me Away On A Carousel - Louis Vuitton Does Sixties In The Most Magical Way

Sometimes, something happens that is just, well, magical. We were pretty blown away but the quite spectacular SS 2012 catwalk (or cat-ride) from the fabulous Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton at Paris fashion week. The audience were treated to a fabulous white fairground carousel complete with white horses all ridden by models in a dreamlike trance until each one stepped down onto the catwalk to show off the collection.

The colour tone was pastel and the mood ethereal with a strong focus on some seriously sixties a-line and 50s puff ball skirt styling. Clearly, Ms Moss was the star of the show in a feathered mini dress and bridal inspired headband. We loved the retro shapes contrasted with steel toe capped pointy shoes and were left very ready for next summer! So beautiful, so sixties....so getting a carousel in the living room. End of.

Here is our favourite 60s style dress from our little shop to help you leap ahead of the fash pack:

Mince Pies in M&S

Right, it is NOT Christmas. We nearly dropped our Percy pigs when we saw mince pies on the shelves in M&S this week. Admittedly, we bought some but that is not the point! We have just had a heat wave and haven’t even dressed up as a pumpkin yet so we refuse to get drawn into this ridiculous marketing ploy to talk about the the three kings before the leaves have even fallen off the trees.

If, however, you are thinking about stockings of the festive kind, we want this 1960s vintage dress for Christmas  parties:

To The Max

Maximilism. Pardon? - we hear you say! Well, those savvy amongst you will know that, right now, more is more! This season's most decadent trend is all about elaborate textures, gold, jewels, over the top dripping in jewellery and stacking your bling till there is no space left on you. The aim of the game is maximum impact to draw maximum attention. Shrinking violets need not apply! Here are our top tips and picks from our lovely boutique to get you started. Think big ladies and knock em dead!

Tip 1. Let it Glow - It is all about gold.

Tip 2. Bobby Dazzlers - HUGE earrings are a must

Tip 3 - Stacked jewels - more is more is more.

Tip 4 - Blinging arm candy. Make it shine - the more ostentatious the better!

Pippa Middleton & The Steamy Clutch

Ok, so it's not a budding romance with a famous celeb but we are all excited about Pippa Middleton's colour popping clutch she was seen out in recently. We are huge fans of the clutch and they are having a massive fashion moment right now.

Obviously, the world wide problem of actually carrying them for a whole night whilst avoiding the dreaded - "I just put it down for a moment" issues still plague our thoughts but, you know what? A good clutch is totally worth it.

We love the look of a sleek clutch against a sexy LBD or a pop of colour against your favourite skinny jeans and blazer combo. So, in honour of the hand held arm candy, we have selected a couple of our favourites and you can even bag yourself  (see what we did there) Pippa's very own clutch in a variety of delicious colours - our fav being the totally on trend leopard print beauty below. Ladies, get clutching! (Handbags of course - naughty!)

Sherbet and Metal - Match made in Mulberry Heaven!

Ok, so LFW is seriously distracting! We have fallen in love with the Mulberry collection with its almost edible outfits in sherbet tones and metallic brocades and accessories. Oh, and they have, again, added some canine fashion – this time in the shape of a miniature Schnauzer – awesome.

Introducing the Dogwalk.

I think this might actually might be edible.

Metallics featuring heavily in SS12 collections - Bling!

Marvellous Metallics
Whilst sherbet may be a bit too summery for right now, we reckon the metallic tones would work well as part of an autumnal pallet too. Check out the Rock My Vintage collection to work this into your wardrobe and stay a hop, skip and long jump ahead of the fashion pack.

Made His Marc

We were so excited about the Marc Jacobs SS12 collection and he didn't disappoint! We love the 20s inspired flapper style tasselled skirt with a modern twist in metallic sharp edges. Everything had a shimmering edge and was full of seductive speak easy charm. We are wishing away the winter and day dreaming of a time when we can work this divine look. Nom Nom Nom.

Swing Me.

If you are looking for some feet stomping, hip swishing, jazz hands action this weekend - swing by the Electro Speakeasy on the Southbank London. There will be a great mix of vintage music reworked with an electro beat. In collaboration with White Mink who make some fab electro swing compilations, this is set to be a day time festival of ear tingling wonderfulness. This is what we like best - vintage with a modern twist - why that's RMV too. Match made in heaven! See you there - dancing pants off. x

I'm A Lady!

Well, at least we can try and look like one even if the power to act like one escapes us from time to time! AW is all about lady of the manor chic and we have to admit we love the thought of adorning pussy bows, soft tweeds and tonnes of decadent aristocratic jewellery. Ya darling! Fear not though, even if you are more ladette than lady you can still nod to this trend by simply adding a vintage silk scarf to your neck – an accessory that can lift anything from your battered aviator to your favourite skinnie jeans, sneakers and knit combo.
For us, the pussybow is key and there are already one or two of these little beauties appearing on the RMV ladies. Prim and proper, vintage twist and just the right amount of cheeky bold print to keep it not so serious. Bingo – AW trend nailed. Thank you kindly. x

Great Scot!

Great Scot Emma Watson looks tartan-licious in this McQueen 50s style prom dress! Tartan will be a massive part of the Heritage look this season and toughening it up with leather and patent gives it a thoroughly modern twist. If you think it's a bit much to wear from head to toe - try a vintage handbag for a more understated take on the trend! PS we want those shoes too.
