THE DREADED "IN-BETWEEN SEASONS" BIT AND HOW TO NAIL IT!

It's the time of the year when we don't know whether to shed our Winter layers and shave our legs or put a puffer on and continue to hibernate. Shopping is a nightmare, what should I buy in the Sales? Is it a waste of money?

We are here to help with the low-down on how to buy for this weird time of year, keep your vintage style and make your money work hard for you.

1. Buy a 1920s dress for going out.

It's simple - you still go dancing whatever the weather and, usually, abandon all rational thought process around covering up anyway! That's where the 1920s style dress comes in a dream. Full of sparkle, personality and general all round vintage wonder, these flapper inspired dresses are a key and stable wardrobe piece that you can turn out in Spring with lighter shades of jewellery to keep them fresh. This black and gold 1920s dress is a perfect example of transitional evening dressing.

2. Buy a tran-seasonal colour.

It may not be the best shout to buy a dark forest green dress when lighter days are on the horizon so stick to a colour-way that will work in a few months time. Think brighter tones or patterns like this vintage prom dress and you are all set for months ahead.

3. Think layers.

'Tis the season for tights, sheer ankle socks and even stockings (the catwalks told us so) so invest in some cool layers and add a fur stole or kooky cardi to keep you warm, then abandon at will when it warms up. Tea dresses, like this quirky yellow number, are an ideal contender so invest now and you will still be rocking it in June.

So, you can dress for all seasons with the help of a few clever tips and remember that the safest investment is an evening dress that can be worn all year round. Our money is always on a 1920s dress, as it will never go out of style and the bling will always bring happiness!

Transition with ease when you go for gold!

Gold, always believe in your soul...and the power of a marvellous metallic to take you through two seasons!

Glittering Gold Goddess made simple with this Gold Fringed Flapper

With sale season upon us, it is difficult to know how to spend your cash. However, here at RMV we have always had firm faith in the shiny stuff and here's why....

Anything with a metallic sheen screams party season and when it comes to getting your glad rags on it doesn't matter if your metal is pastel or pewter so you can shimmy through the Winter in a blush rose as long as it brings some bling!

Think shimmering pastels for Summer Sheen turning into Ice Queen of Cool
This beauty is straight from our 1920s Dresses Collection

What's more, with RSVP season still in full swing, you will get plenty of wear out of it now as best dressed guest. Then, just switch it up, change your accessories, add a fake fur stole and you are hot to trot when the heat fizzles out.

Stick with a classic silver sheen
and this Summer sizzler becomes another one of your eye-catching Winter Party Dresses

You see, your old man was right, invest in gold - it will never depreciate in value!

Big shout out to all the metallic magpies xx

Full On Flapper Vs A Glint of Gatsby

We just can't get enough of flapper fashion so thought we'd share with you some cool styling tips and ideas to really get into the swing of things when it comes to 1920s style! It's always fun to really go all out and mimic the authentic art deco look but you can create the same glamour and elegance by simply popping on a tassel necklace or coveting geometric shaped accessories.

Its fun to experiment and push the boundaries with your look but here we have simply pepped up a low key, stylish evening outfit with some glamorous accessories. The trick here is to choose one dramatic statement piece like the chevron clutch and choose items that compliment it. You can create a 20s look without going over the top and it looks great to mix  some Gatsby glamour with a modern contemporary outfit.

Here we have toyed with the idea of mixing old and new by recreating a flapper girl look with this stunning pink and white dress but have selected on trend colours and silhouettes. The bright fuchsia and orange hue bring this dress up to date, along with its figure hugging fit but the textures, crystals and embellishments reflect the Hollywood glamour of the 1920s.

See you at the funfair: candyfloss, lollipops and lemons

We're off to the fairground with these carnival style summer picks! Capturing the candy cool atmosphere of the funfair, the carousels and teacups, lollipops and circus themed rides, we're just set to experience the thrill! It may not be pennies for the rides anymore but our retro wonders are definitely taking us back to the good old days...

The longer days and nicer weather (okay, so we meant ten minutes of sun in-between downpours!) mean you can kit yourself out in kitch and ride that helter skelter in style! Our Gold Shell Clutch oozes the vintage glamour of those 1920s circus girls, paired with the Lucas Jack Gold Star Cuff and you'll be glittering with gold, flapper style. We know our Lemon Print Playsuit will look oh-so-cute at the coconut shy, and our Lolly Pop Print Prom Dress matches the sweet scent of cotton candy and will have the crowd oohing and aahing underneath the big wheel!

Flapper girl for a day: RMV does the movies

Our very own Marie recently took part as an extra in the filming of an independent project run by the production company Six O's Studio, where she spent the day masquerading as a flirty flapper! Located in a 1920s cafe beautifully named 'The Cafe Wisteria', the scene is set for hero Peter Pendragon to meet the love of his life, who also happens to be his nemesis...

An array of fringing and feathers, glimmering sequins, twenties props and luxurious beading decorated the glorious scene. It was a lavish trip back in time to the opulent elegance of the jazz age, with every actor head-to-toe in Gatsby style glamour and the location adorned with all of the flapper era extravagance you could ever dream of. Our flapper dress and diamante clutch bag totally complimented the dazzling decadence of the scene.

You can find further information about Six O's Studio over on their Twitter. Check out photos from the day below...

Uh oh...here comes trouble! Get Peaky Blinder style...

We're super proud of our Birmingham heritage and what could be better than the magnificent show Peaky Blinders returning to our screens tonight at 9pm!

The inspiration for the show is fascinating and you can read more about it here. The original Brummie boys, the 'Peakys' were local gangsters from a century ago. These violent criminals would sew razor blades into the peak of their flat caps to use as weapons and had a distinctive sartorial style that set them apart from the rest! The girlfriends were described as wearing ornate pearls, a goudy silk handkerchief covering their throat and showing off a full fringe obscuring the forehead, we can only imagine what they would have looked like in one of our dresses...

We really think that Polly and Grace's dark vs light twenties styles really rock the gothic-luxe trend on the catwalks this season, why not take a look at our gothic 1920s style headbands and chokers for a more sultry flapper vibe?

We love the way this piece of history has inspired one of the most gripping shows we've ever seen...so excited!

Get in the mood with our flapper dress collection, art deco jewellery and flapper headbands for your next night in with the Peaky boys...

Liberation and Fashion - The Danish Girl

The excitement has been building for one of the most stylish films of the year...well we think so anyway! The Danish Girl is a powerful biopic of the transgender artist Lili Elbe, beautifully set in Copenhagen and Paris between 1926 and 1931, a time when fashion was undergoing a radical change – think Coco Chanel – ooh la la! You know we love the 1920s and 30s, all those flapper dresses and floral frocks!

A mesmerising story of liberation, not only for the movie’s main character, but for the progression of fashion throughout the film. Every outfit is put together with intricate attention and detail, with the hair styled to perfection, complimenting all of the equally opulent interior props and set.

We're already in love with Lili's gorgeous cropped hair! What could be better than dressing up for the movies, perhaps with some of our art deco jewellery, and drinking in this vintage feast for the eyes? The sumptuous hues and romantic sets are so easy to fall in love with.

Oh the florals, the lace, the fringing! We think our style steal picks below capture the delicate craft and tones of the fabulous gowns and decor in the film....
